Mother Teresa, in helping the dying poor of Calcutta, once said: "What we are doing is just a drop in the ocean, but the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."
COLE is proud to achieve a milestone this year, after enlisting a total of 100 scholars in grade school, high school, university/ colleges and technical schools, since its founding date.
At the same time, the socio-civic arm GABBY (Gabay Bayanihan), has also reach its own milestone with the deployment of 100 farmers for 100 farm projects for sustainable livelihood in the mountain villages of Zamboanga, Philippines.
COLE is setting its sights to have 100 farmer beneficiaries to do organic farming. Not only will it provide livelihood it will also contribute to a healthy environment. Furthermore, it sees this advocacy to be a model in making farmers and consumers aware on the benefits of organic farming and the health hazards brought about by using chemicals in planting.
One advocacy of GABBY is to promote a livelihood for poor farmers through organic farming. Unlike other methods of farming which heavily uses chemical fertilizers and insecticides, organic farming was introduced by Mr. Renato Yumul during the early part of this year. The project is managed by Ms. Rea P. Potenciano who previously worked as a community organizer under a WMSU-ROOF, non-government organization arm, ZABIDA from 2009-2010 promoting organic farming. Rea is also a COLE scholar who graduated last 2009, with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business from Western Mindanao State University.
Organic farming is an environmental friendly method to plant crops. Aside from this, it reduces health hazards from the exposure to chemicals. It is also cost saving since farmers are taught how to make their own organic fertilizers.
The project was launched in Sinubong on the 20th of June 2011 with four farmer beneficiaries who attended a 3-week orientation/training seminar. After training, COLE through its social action arm GABBY, supplies the farmers with farming tools and seeds.
After the crops cycle, the farmers are expected to plant again, utilizing proceeds from their harvest. Proper monitoring is conducted to ensure that farmers continue with the program in organic farming.
The aim of COLE in spearheading this project is to educate farmers on the benefits of organic farming and provide them with livelihood.
Sinubong Day Care Center was featured in Zamboanga Today.
As part of their socio-civic contribution to the community, the Royales family in Sinubong set up a day care center to cater to the educational needs of children ages 3 – 6 years old coming from poor farming families in the area.
The day care center project, a non-profit undertaking aimed to provide pre-school education to young children was unveiled recently.
District I Congresswoman Beng Climaco, whose foremost advocacy is to initiate activities for the protection and welfare of children, was the first government official to visit the day care center since it was formally inaugurated a month ago.
The lady solon brought along foodstuff and goodies for over 50 children and their mothers who were at the day care center to welcome her last week.
The day care center is owned and operated by Jovita S. Royales, whose son Raymond, an overseas worker in Singapore is financially supporting the institution. The management does not charge any fee for the services being provided.
On hand to welcome Cong. Climaco at the center were teachers Estrella Navarro and Rita Royales.
Cong. Climaco expressed gratitude to the Royales family for voluntarily contributing for the wellbeing of the pre-schoolers in the area as she continually urged “Let us help make the future of the children a reality today.”
Lensman Ryan Sta. Teresa captured some significant moments during the congresswoman’s visit to the Sinubong day care center.
